Helping Change Cancer As We Know It
The arsenal against cancer was once limited to surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. But now, thanks to the contribution of thousands of patients and countless hours of research, cancer treatments are changing in ways previously unimagined. Clinical trials are absolutely necessary for transforming cancer care.
From research to treatment
New approaches in immunotherapy, genetic technology, and drug development are possible because people diagnosed with cancer participate in clinical trials.
Cancer clinical trials help us learn if new therapies, drug combinations, technologies or methods are effective and to understand how they work. And what we learn from one type of cancer can sometimes apply to others.
Through progress from clinical trials, we are seeing:
- Precision medicine that treats patients based on their individual genetic makeup.
- More effective treatments, with fewer side effects.
- Dramatic and long-lasting results.
- Treatments with lasting remissions for cancers we once thought were incurable.
- New ways to screen for cancer and detect it early.
- Ways to improve the quality of life for patients.
Why you play an important role
When you participate in a clinical trial, you receive excellent care by physicians at every step. But without new trials, we will not be able to get new treatments to patients. Please talk to your doctor about participating in a clinical trial and about what trials may be available to you.
We need you now more than ever:
- Only about 3% of adult cancer patients enroll in clinical trials in the U.S., much lower than for pediatric trials.
- Enrollment in clinical trials is even lower among minority and medically underserved populations.
- Many clinical trials close due to lack of enrollment.
